Out of 40 lakh Only One lakh NRC in Assam Filed Claims

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register containing names of all real Indian citizens residing in Assam. The update method of NRC started within the year 2013 under the strict observance of Supreme Court of India. On the midnight of 31 Dec 2017, part Draft NRC was released and later on the whole Draft NRC was released on 30th July, 2018.

The purpose of NRC update is to identify the unlawful migrants residing in Assam, who entered Indian territories on the midnight of twenty four March 1971 and to determine the citizenship of the candidates who have applied for inclusion of their names within the updated NRC.

The persons, whose names are not available within the Draft NRC, could file claim application inside a stipulated period at the NSK where the application form was submitted. An individual can also have an objection against entry of any name within the draft NRC. The objections to entry of names of persons within the draft updated NRC will be filed before the LRCR.

Any person may also apply for correction of his name or the other entry in his respect as appearing within the Draft updated NRC, he/ she will file correction application within a stipulated period before the LRCR.

The Supreme Court turned down a plea by the Central government to additional extend the time for verification of claims submitted by those whose names are excluded from the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC), on the far side November twenty three. “Only one lakh of the forty lakh excluded have up to now submitted their claims,” attorney General of India KK Venugopal told the court.

The verification of identities of the people, who have migrated from West Bengal to Assam, for the National Register of Citizens (NRC), could take another few months to be completed, a senior state government official said in Kolkata.

There isn’t one paper lying with us right away. All those that weren’t sent for updating the NRC are awaiting verification. It verification is a long method and that we are working on it. It’s going to take another few months to be completed the official told PTI on condition of obscurity. He said that there was pressure from the Assam government in returning the NRC verification documents with efficiency.

West Bengal is that the biggest defaulter within the NRC verification method, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India Sailesh, who is overseeing the whole exercise of the NRC, had said. The NRC verification is faster in areas like Kolkata however is “pretty slow” within the rural areas, he said. Stating that less manpower is a reason for the delay, he gave the instance of cases that required to be verified from the West Bengal Council of higher secondary education. The official said that the home department was conjointly serving to those departments in need of infrastructure in expediting the method of NRC verification.
