The Supreme court says more drugs are smuggled from inside police stations than outside. The Apex Court said, Courts are told that rats eat away the seized drugs by policemen when Narcotic case comes up in court for hearing.
The Supreme Court on Thursday while hearing into issues related to De-congestion of police station in Delhi, asked Delhi Police that why impounded or seized vehicles continue to be at police stations and are not sold in case where Nobody comes forward to claim ownership of seized vehicle. Some vehicles are still in police station from so many years and are destroying.
The bench comprised of Justices Madan B Lokur, S Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta made observation as Delhi Police said that policy would be framed within 4 weeks regarding Decongestion of Police Station by removing and disposing of impounded or seized vehicles.
In the cases of NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic substance act) till the time when it comes to cognizance of court for hearing the seized drug get vanishes from Malkhana and police says that rats eat the drugs. Malkhana are rooms in Police Station where materials seized during investigations are kept. The Bench observed that in Narcotic cases more drugs are smuggled out from the Malkhana than from any other source.
The Apex Court further said, those vehicles which are seized in Police stations and are kept till years and years are mostly either stolen or used in crime. Hence nobody comes forward to claim the ownership of seized vehicle and it stays for long years and becomes dump. So to solve this problem police should frame the policy so that such materials could be sold or disposed of.
